The Round-Up: April
30 April 2012
Having managed to bring both a drought and enough torrential rain to have Noah running for his chopper, April is nearly at an end. To all our loyal readers, this means now is the time for us to have a look back at the month, and see which news has grabbed our attention. There are certainly some intriguing ones, with everything from Scotland Yard to the golden boys at Apple taking a hit. Enjoy…
Anti terrorism unit YouTubed. Alright, we’ll admit it: whenever we hear the term ‘anti-terrorism’, we immediately think of Jack Bauer. However, there was a complete lack of Chloe in the news this month, as a supposed top-security anti-terrorist hotline was this week hacked by two teenagers and the subsequent call put up on YouTube. Whilst the conversation itself is actually a prank call between a member of the hacking group (who go by the charming alias of Team Poison), it nevertheless highlighted that potentially no-one is safe from hackers. Makes you think about who deals with your internet security, doesn’t it?
Mac Hack. One of the main points that Mac enthusiasts (alright, rabid devotees) make regarding their great white love is that Apple’s beasts are far less likely to be hacked, certainly compared to their Windows-based brethren. Or at least they were. This month, the Russian search gurus Dr Web claimed that there were 600,000 Macs worldwide currently infected by a Trojan malware virus that enables them to be accessed remotely, with a significant number of them currently being used in the UK. Whilst Apple have released a security update, many of the users remain exposed to the virus. With the passing of Steve Jobs and the iPad 3’s rather lukewarm reception, the last thing Apple need now is a serpent in the garden.
FBI warns of the mass hack. Dear me, hacking seems to be rather a theme this month. Taking another leaf from the branch of security, no less than the FBI this week warned that a massive 300,000 computers could be at risk of losing their internet services following another hacking scam. Originating from an advertising scam, the hack essentially causes a DNS issue and prevents the users from accessing the web at all. Originally, the FBI took the unusual approach of installing a new server to help keep the infected users internet up. However, because the system is costing too much, it will be removed from the 7 July, and those infected will once again be without the web. So if your net goes down from the 7th July, you’ll know why!
Mmm, raspberry pi. Without doubt one of the more intriguing developments in terms of computing within education, the Raspberry Pi was finally unleashed at a school in Leeds. A truly unique creation, the Pi was designed by a Cambridge based-charity in order to help youngsters begin to understand computer science at a basic level. Roughly the size of a credit card, it displays a naked circuit board that is completely capable of running a Linux operating system on which coding applications is possible. With the teaching of ICT in schools consistently making the news in the last few months, this latest development could do wonders for Michael Gove, the current Education Secretary.
Finally, we must end April on a rather sad note, as earlier this month we lost a true pioneer in the world of computing. Jack Tramiel, who was 83, passed away from heart failure. The founder of Commodore, he was responsible for some of the most legendary gaming and computing machines in history, including the Commodore 64 and the Amiga. One of the earliest innovators of the home computer, everything that we do and love would be decidedly different without him. Our condolences to his family.
