Case Study Mencap

Free Space Optic Installation

Customer Name

Royal Mencap Society

Dates

Contract awarded & completed in March 2017

Background:

Mencap obtained new office space less than half a mile away from their current Peterborough office and required a secured data connection between the two buildings to allow network communications and data transfers. The Remark Group were contracted to provide a cost-effective solution to facilitate the requirement and our specialist team designed and undertook the installation of a Free Space Optic Laser Link with minimal disruption to the organisation.

Challenges:

  • Working around a live operating office whilst keeping disruption to a minimum
  • Liaising with the client’s IT department for connection to the existing Data Network Infrastructure
  • A large building and several small roads were direct obstacles between the two buildings
  • The alternative solution was to install underground Fibre Optic Cabling which was time consuming and not financially viable
  • Finding a cost-effective solution that would suit the client

Actions & Solutions:

Mencap contracted the Remark Group after receiving quotations for the installation of Fibre Optic Cabling which proved to not be financially viable for the charity.

Upon an extensive survey and discussions with the client, Remark proposed a comprehensive solution to facilitate a secure Fibre Optic Link between the two buildings via the means of a laser link mounted on the outside of both buildings. The laser link offers speeds up to 1gbps, those similar to traditional Fibre Optic Cabling, while allowing point-to-point connectivity of up to 5000 meters.

Following our initial site survey and investigations, our technical team supplied and installed the most suitable wireless connectivity devices for Mencap’s requirements and budget. Remark also installed two customer owned RF wireless bridge devices as a secondary link in the unlikely event of the primary laser link failing.

Due to the position of the Mencap buildings and the challenge of a large building between them both, Remark’s highly skilled engineers carefully planned the positioning of the wireless fibre-optic connections to ensure there was no disruptions between the laser links.

Remark ensured that that our technicians work was carried out in a safe, clean and professional standard to reflect Remarks core principles and values for our clients installation.
