Community Network Services approached Remark Group looking to improve speech privacy within their office environment.

The initial concern centred around two meeting rooms, where conversations were regularly disrupted by noise travelling from the surrounding open-plan office. While the immediate priority was to create a more confidential space for meetings, the team were also keen to explore whether a wider solution could improve the overall working environment for employees.

The Solution

Sound Masking Throughout the Workplace

Following an assessment of the office, we recommended a sound masking solution as the most effective way to improve speech privacy without altering the existing layout of the workspace.

Sound masking introduces a carefully engineered background sound, similar to gentle airflow, which reduces the intelligibility of surrounding conversations. Rather than blocking sound completely, it makes speech less distracting and less likely to be overheard, helping create a more comfortable and confidential workplace.

By reducing interruptions and improving acoustic comfort across the office, the solution addressed both the original meeting room concerns and the wider challenges of working in an open-plan environment.

Demonstration

To help the Community Network Services team experience the technology first-hand, we invited them to our Peterborough headquarters, where sound masking is installed throughout our own office.

Experiencing the system in a real working environment demonstrated the benefits beyond the two meeting rooms originally identified. The team could immediately appreciate how sound masking improved privacy, reduced distractions and created a calmer office atmosphere.

Following the demonstration, the project evolved from a meeting room-focused installation into a complete sound masking solution across the open-plan office, delivering benefits for the wider workforce.
