If you’re thinking of getting sound masking installed in your premises, or already have some systems in place, you’ll need to know when the system should be adjusted. Alongside the central system, you can have an individual control unit installed, which is a small dial that can turn the volume or frequency up or down according to your requirements. But what if that isn’t enough? What if you need to re-evaluate your installation after a building renovation, for instance? We’ve got all your uncertainties covered in this article.

When should you adjust the volume?

This will depend on what you’re using the sound masking treatment for. The more private or confidential the meeting, the more you’ll want to ensure no words can’t be overheard from outside the conference room. If you’re treating noise distractions in an open-plan office, the ambient sound can be lowered or raised depending on the capacity of workers in each area.

Sound levels can fluctuate constantly throughout the day. The sound masking should be adapted, so that the ambient sound is raised during busy periods, and lowered during calmer office hours. If you have multiple sound masking zones, you can alter the volume of each zone separately.

Who can adjust the volume?

If you’re managing a bank or financial advisory service, for instance, you’ll want to make sure clients have a sufficient amount of privacy to protect their personal information. In this case, it may not make sense to have a control unit that can be adjusted by all your employees. Instead, you can have a system that can only be accessed by key individuals.

When to get an installation review?

You should get an installation review if you’ve made any changes to the structure or use of the treated areas. You may need to add more emitters, or even have some removed if they’re surplus to requirements.
