Defining speech privacy: How does it work?
Speech privacy refers to the ability of an unintended listener to understand another person’s conversation. When speech is hard to understand or unintelligible – workers tend to not even notice it – it simply fades into the background.
When speech is easy to understand– it becomes very distracting and impacts on productivity.
Sound masking helps to reduce the intelligibility of speech, meaning that workplace and telephone conversations become less distracting to surrounding co-workers. It works by introducing a low-level sound, similar to air flow, through speakers installed in the ceiling, creating a blanket of sound.
Sound masking helps to reduce the area where speech is intelligible and distracting upwards of 50 feet to around 15 feet. Employees can still collaborate with their neighbour and take important phone calls but are no longer a distraction to others around them.
